Evie flinched at the sound of the vault door closing behind Veraza as he left. He hadn’t said another word to her after letting her know—in no uncertain terms—that what had just happened between them had been all about getting a job done. There’d been nothing more to it.

For him, this was about regaining his wings. He didn’t want Evie. He’d been forced into this. Veraza would do whatever it took to reach his goal. She already knew that.

So why was she so upset that it hadn’t meant more to him to be so intimate with her?

She was no stranger to having incredible sex. Her two mates could play her body like the finest instrument. They had made her orgasm all the time, just as powerfully as Veraza had. When Gray shared their connection during sex, it was even more incredible to feel the echoes of each other’s pleasure, which amped her own climax into the stratosphere.

That was something Veraza couldn’t do. Yet, having him inside her, his alien erection bent upwards so that the textured part of it kept hitting her g-spot every time he pumped inside her, had still felt so good that she’d been able to forget for a short time what they were here for in the first place.

The experience had been far better than she’d feared it would be, and she’d hoped that had been the case for Veraza too. Unfortunately, it appeared that he regretted what happened between them as he’d pulled away from her. In fact, he would have pulled away from her immediately if she hadn’t asked him to hold her.

She knew her words were at least partially responsible for his withdrawal. She shouldn’t have mentioned NEX so soon after they did the deed. She’d spoken her thoughts aloud out of habit as they occurred to her, because she couldn’t hide her thoughts from Gray, and she’d forgotten that she could conceal them from Veraza. At least, long enough to cuddle a little, while the afterglow faded.

When the crawlers entered the room a few minutes after Veraza’s retreat, Evie sat up with a heavy sigh, pulling the comforter around her like a makeshift robe to cover her nudity. His seed spilled down between her thighs, warm at first from her body heat, then rapidly chilling as it met the air. She sighed again, ignoring the slipperiness for the moment as she contemplated the tray of food that NEX had sent.

It lacked the variety of the previous meals. This one held only her favorites. The foods that she’d ignored on previous trays were not present now. NEX was apparently recording her preferences and adjusting its offerings. It was learning about her, and that thought gave her the chills. She hated that AI and what it was forcing her to do. She hated what it was doing to Veraza. She despised what it was doing to her loved ones.

But she couldn’t do anything about her situation without jeopardizing the safety of New Omni and her family.
